Course description: EXPERIMENTARIUM // This course is an introduction to the art of animated images. The dream of bringing inanimate objects to life through the illusion of time dates back to the ancient Lascaux cave paintings; we will experiment hands-on with some of the many animation methods that have evolved since then. Our mode of working will be D.I.Y. : Do It Yourself – signifying original, low-fi, low-budget work-flows where concept and care are in focus. We will train our creativity with short exercises on-class. As our work progresses we will enter the digital sphere of After Effects and similar computing programs.

Learning objectives: • We will create a historical overview of the history of animation. • Students will experiment with a wide variety of hand-made animations to focus on concept development and discover their individual technical strengths. • Students will reflect on digitalization processes and gain basic knowledge of After Effects. Learning outcomes At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Navigate within a wide range of animation practices. • Reflect on their use of techniques in specific contexts. • Present their animation skills in a short show-reel.

Course content: This course consists of a number of short-term assignments, ranging from 1-3 weeks, each dealing with a different animation technique. During this time we will focus on concept development, elaborating on the visual “signature” of the students and training our ability to think and act creatively. Each class will begin with a creative training exercise encouraging students to “think outside of the box” and challenging their mode of perception, interaction and visualisation.

Assessment sheet / The assessment criteria’s for this course is divided in three main parts: Class work (20%) Your general efforts in and contribution to the class, concentration, helpfulness, participation. Assignments (30%) Creativity and passion. The development of ideas and their careful implementation. Final exam (50%) The general outcome of the course presented in a show-reel.
