Mohammad Shawky Hassan is a filmmaker living and working in Cairo, Egypt. He studied philosophy, film directing and cinema studies at the American University in Cairo, The Academy of Cinematic Arts & Sciences and Columbia University. His films include: It Was Related to Me (2011), On a Day like Today (2012), Compos Mentis (2016) & And on a Different Note (2015), which premiered at the Berlinale Forum Expanded, and was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York as part of its permanent collection. He is a recipient of the Fulbright Fine & Applied Arts Grant (2010) and the HUSSLab Post-MA Fellowship at the American University in Cairo (2017). His work has been supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Arab Fund for Arts & Culture (AFAC), The Young Arab Theater Fund (YATF), Fonds Sud Cinema, The MacDowell Colony and Al Mawred Al Thaqafy (Cultural Resource), among others. He was the film programs director at ArteEast (New York), the director of the Network of Arab Alternative Screens (NAAS) from 2011 till 2016 and the residential fellow for Art & Philosophy at the Cairo Institute of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CILAS) in 2016-2017.
