Media Installation

Course MD615 | Christian Dootz, Rewan Gamaly, Amira El Badry

"Emotionally meaningful transformative shared experience"

A Gesamtkunstwerk (translated as total work of art, ideal work of art, universal artwork, synthesis of the arts, comprehensive artwork, all-embracing art form or total artwork) is a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms or strives to do so. ― Wikipedia

Media Installations are three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. Originally, they have been constructed in exhibition spaces such as museums and galleries, but became soon more and more important in commercial contexts as tools to enhance corporate communication processes. The genre incorporates a broad range of everyday and natural materials, which are often chosen for their "evocative" qualities, as well as new media such as video, sound, performance, immersive virtual reality and the internet.

Course Outline

This course will explore in theory and practice the conceptual strategies of installation and media art. The lecture series will offer a historical overview on the topic, while the practical part of the course will result in a student exhibition consisting of various mixed media installations.

Learning Outcome, Competences

The students will work on installation projects in order to get an understanding about the complexity and challenges of this field. The interplay of media, space, time and user will be examined. Tools will be introduced to develop concepts and solutions for setting up site specific and appropriate media implementations with photography, video, sound and interactive tools.
