Course Description

Introduction to conceptual workflows of :

  • Layer based compositing approaches
  • Rotoscoping and roto-painting
  • Color Grading and color-correction
  • Advanced matte-extraction solutions
  • 3D compositing
  • Integration techniques


Course Goals

  • Deepened knowledge of digital image manipulation.
  • Goal-oriented preproduction development.
  • Comprehension of convincing compositing- and integration techniques.


Assessment Criteria

25% Assignments
10% AE tutorial presentations
15% Class Participation, Work in Progress 50% Final movie:

  • Midterm: Pre-production presentation (1/3 of the final)
  • Project movie presentation (2/3 of the final)



Late Assignment Rules:

Assignment handed in on time: 100% MAX
Assignment handed in one day late: 75% MAX
Assignment handed in any time later: 50% MAX

Final Project Topic

  • Topic: 'Help I am trapped in a Scifi Movie'
  • 60sec - 120sec movie.
  • Combination of real footage and composited graphics or CGI.

Midterm Pre-Production Presentation Guidelines:

  • The presentations will take place in the midterm week: Wednesday, the 21.10.2015. Please be on time.
  • Analysis of original movie scene regarding: Camera perspective (distance, angle), Camera movements (dolly, pan, crane, hand-held), Lighting and Color mood
  • Presentation of an integration prototype video.
  • Shooting plan as Pdf including: equipment, actors and time schedule

Mini Project 1: Digital Composite: Dreams and Reveries - Digital Pan

After Effects Presentation Guidelines

  • Watch the tutorial assigned to you and make a 15 mn presentation explaining the main points
  • Use the given out tutorials as a reference, and you are highly encouraged to search for other options and workflows
  • Prepare material for practicing in class, Use your own footage

Please hand-in the following:
- your After Effects File ( File ->Collect Files)
- 1 A4 pdf with a summary of your explained tutorial
