Course Description

Introduction to conceptual workflow of :

  • Node-based compositing
  • Image transformation and merging
  • Rotoscoping and roto-painting
  • Grading and color-correction
  • Advanced matte-extraction solutions
  • 3D compositing
  • Creating of basic 3d elements
  • Integration of cgi and video footage

Optional: Possibilities of multichannel compositing
Optional: 3d-Particle Systems


Theoretical Lectures:

  • Optics and visual perception
  • Elements of digital color manipulation
  • The math behind color-correction


Film Analysis :

  • Short film analysis


Practical Tutorials :

  • "The Power Change" (AfterEffects Practical test)
  • "Monstereyes" (Rotopainting and Integration)
  • "Graffiti@GUC" (perspective reconstrution and Integration)
  • "The desert landscape" (3-dimensional matte painting)
  • "Shooting for Integration"

Optional: Lighting for Compositing

Course Goals

  • Deepened knowledge of digital image manipulation.
  • Usage of a node-based compositing solution.
  • Goal-oriented practical exercises.
  • Comprehension of higher compositing techniques.

Course Weights

  • 50% Assignments
  • 50% Final Exam

Assignment Regulations

All assignments have to be given in the following manner:

  • One .Zip File max. 30MB. (If too big - sources have to be reduced)
  • The .Zip File has to be named in the following manner:
    "DC2_assign_Noxx_NameofStudent_StudentID.zip"\\xx for the assignment number.
  • All sources and project-files have to be contained
  • All projects need to be managed via "collect files" into one folder before saving.

Assessment Details

The following projects will be graded throughout the semester:

  • 1. After Effects - Desert Scape 2d-Pan 5%
  • 2. Monster Eye 20 %
  • 3. 3d Graffiti 25%
  • 4. Final Exam 50% "3d Desert Scape"

Please notice: We could not fulfill the planned 5 projects, but only 3 projects. On the grading system there are no changes possible to the amount of assignments. Therefore the Assignment "MonsterEye" will be also graded for the assignment "MonsterEye Warping" and the Assignment "3d-Graffiti" will be also graded for the assignment "3d-Desert Scape".

Final Assignment Details

The Deadline for the Final exam is: 16.01.2013 - 11.59pm
